ARLENE YAP

I am a multidisciplinary artist with a passion for illustration, anatomy, public health, and good design. I work in both traditional and digital mediums, often combining the two.

I graduated from New York University with a BFA in studio art and psychology. After working in fashion and design, I realized that my passion was illustration. I continued freelance illustrative work as a balance to my day job, and then found anatomical illustration as a point of interest.

I studied medical art at the University of Dundee's joint CAHID and DJCAD program and graduated with a Masters of Science in Medical Art. The joint study of art and anatomy has lead to a rich understanding of the human body, medicine, and how to capture these ideas in traditional and digital 2D and 3D art.

My interests lie in the continued study of anatomy and medicine, and how to better use art as a tool in communicating complex ideas to people of all walks of life.

WHY ATLAS + AXIS

The "atlas" and "axis" of the human body are the commonplace names of the first and second cervical vertebrae in the spine. These bones are crucial to the freedom of movement we utilize daily as human beings. The atlas supports the skull, while the axis allows it to rotate, giving the full range of mobility in the head and neck.
